Her father had always been proud of her academic
achievements however little. She still had the bicycle he bought for her when
she topped her class in primary three. It was somewhere in the garage of the
Ikoyi house. The house she had lived in with her father, the house her Uncles
left for her. Nobody wanted the house just like nobody wanted her. That’s why
they allowed her to continue her education abroad so they won’t have to pay her
visits or accommodate her during school breaks. She liked it just like that,
the feelings were mutual.
A gentle
chill brought her out of her thoughts. One more thing she loved about the
beach. It always brought back memories. She had to get inside; she couldn’t
afford to catch a cold, not if she wanted to impress her new boss tomorrow.
She
had taken up a job as the new chief surgeon in Tinan city clinic
“Good morning madam” the gate man
greeted her cheerfully. A bit too cheerfully she thought or probably he was
just always very happy in the morning or just this morning or maybe he liked
her or maybe he was expecting something from her, like a gift or something but
a gift for what? Perhaps his wife put to bed recently or maybe she was expected
to pay toll for passing through the gate. She doubted that was it; the estate
landlords should have taken care of that. Sade continued in her thoughts until
she was on the mainland bridge. Everywhere as far as she could see was packed
full with cars of different sizes and shapes “I guess this what it looks like
on a typical Monday morning in Lagos” she
said to herself ** an angry driver from behind jolted her from her
reverie “e de sun oko yin iya”
